Local History Resource Collection Policy

The Board of Directors and staff of the Hazard Library have identified our patrons’ interest in and need for material on local and family history. We are referring especially to materials about the Cayuga County, NY, Towns of Scipio, Ledyard, Venice and Genoa. In the past, informal donations and collections met the need. With today’s recognition of the value of our local heritage and resources and enhanced computer access, an enriched program of acquisition and organization is justified.

  • The Hazard Library will cooperate with area groups and institutions interested in local history. This cooperation includes but is not limited to:
    • Making the bibliography of the Hazard Library Local History Resource Collection (LHRC) available, and encouraging other organizations to provide similar information.
    • Working with these organizations to identify common interests, avoid unnecessary duplication of materials and be supportive of each other’s educational efforts.
    • Encouraging the donation of primary source materials (or copies) to the most appropriate organization so they are made available to the widest possible audience.
  • The Hazard Library will continue to evaluate, organize and make available for REFERENCE USE local history resources in the collection. Where feasible, duplicate copies of popular or unique materials will be made for circulation.
  • Information requests will be responded to in as timely a manner as possible, with a fee for service to cover the cost of copying, postage, research, etc. The Librarian will respond to requests for copies and publication rights, with appropriate acknowledgement of the Hazard Library. No fee will be charged but credit must be given to the Hazard Library Association, Poplar Ridge, New York.

Acknowledgement for all items borrowed will use the following wording: Courtesy of Hazard Library, Poplar Ridge, NY

  • This policy will be reviewed periodically and the Librarian will recommend to the Board any changes that may be required.
